Allan Robertson was the greatest golfer of his generation?

During the 1840s and 1850s, Allan Robertson was considered almost unbeatable. Wealthy amateurs and professional players challenged him for money, but Robertson’s combination of skill, experience and knowledge of the St Andrews links made him the dominant golfer of his era. He became the first golfer known to shoot below 80 on the Old Course at St Andrews. He recorded a score of 79, a remarkable achievement considering he was playing with wooden clubs and feather-filled balls that behaved very differently from modern golf balls.

Many historians regard him as the first superstar of the game.
