Old Tom Morris never won the Claret Jug?

Despite winning The Open Championship four times, Old Tom Morris never lifted the famous Claret Jug. His victories came in 1861, 1862, 1864 and 1867, several years before the iconic trophy was introduced in 1873.

Instead, Morris won the Challenge Belt, a magnificent leather belt with a silver buckle that was awarded to early Open champions. The belt was retired after Young Tom Morris won The Open three consecutive times from 1868 to 1870, after which the Claret Jug was introduced as the permanent trophy.

This means that the name of one of golf’s greatest champions, forever linked with The Open Championship, is not engraved on the Claret Jug.
