Early golfers played with feather-filled balls?

Before rubber golf balls existed, players used “featheries”—small leather pouches tightly packed with boiled goose feathers. They were expensive to make and easily damaged, making golf a luxury for the wealthy. Feather-filled balls travelled surprisingly well for their time but were easily damaged by water and hard impacts. in the 1840s made golf cheaper, more durable and far more accessible.
