The first golf clubs were handcrafted?

Every early golf club was individually made by skilled craftsmen using hardwoods such as ash, beech, apple or pear. No two clubs were exactly alike, and owning a complete set was a sign of wealth. Because handcrafted clubs and feather balls were costly, early golf was largely reserved for nobles and wealthy merchants. Cheaper equipment in the 19th century helped transform golf into a sport enjoyed by people from all walks of life.
