The R&A wasn’t originally called “The R&A”?

When the Society of St Andrews Golfers was founded in 1754, it wasn’t known as The Royal and Ancient Golf Club. The “Royal” title wasn’t granted until 1834, when King William IV became its patron. From then on, it became known as The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
