Signature of the month
Some of golf’s most compelling figures are not featured in “The Major Quest”. Some of them have never actually won a major. And they don’t need a major trophy to be considered a legend of the game. They built their legacies on longevity, consistency, grit, and moments that fans still talk about today.
The Signature of the Month shines a light on players who deserve recognition for their achievements and contribution to the game. We are highlighting the well-established names as well as the rising stars. Here, I share the stories behind my encounters with these players, explore their place in golf’s history or future, and describe what it was like to add their signature to the collection.
It is not that unusual to see brothers or sisters playing professional golf, but it is pretty special to see them playing in the same tournament. Getting both of their signatures on the same cap is something else again. Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn are two of Thailand’s best-known golfers and have both enjoyed successful careers on the LPGA Tour. Ariya has won two major championships, the 2016 Women’s Open and the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open, while her older sister Moriya has won three times on the LPGA Tour.
I got both signatures at the 2023 Honda LPGA in Pattaya, the same tournament where I collected Hinako Shibuno’s signature (last month’s Signature of the Month). Ariya is on the left in the picture, while Moriya, the older sister, is on the right. Ariya signed on the right side of the cap, while Moriya’s signature is on the left. It was not easy to get them both to sign, as they were at different locations throughout the day. I even had to hurry to get to Moriya as she was leaving the driving range after her round. It is not every day that you get the chance to meet two sisters who are both playing on the LPGA Tour, let alone get them to sign the same cap. It makes this one a bit of a special one in the collection.
